Intro to 3D Printing - A Hands-On Makerspace Workshop

About this Workshop
Curious about 3D printing but not sure where to start? This beginner-friendly workshop is designed to give you a clear, practical introduction to how 3D printers work—and how to use them successfully in a makerspace environment.
We’ll demystify the entire process, from digital design to finished print, while sharing real-world tips that help you avoid common mistakes and wasted material.
What You’ll Learn
-
How FDM (filament) 3D printers work
-
The main parts of a 3D printer and what they do
-
Common materials (PLA, PETG, etc.) and when to use them
-
How slicing software turns a 3D model into printer instructions
-
Key settings that affect print quality, strength, and time
-
How to load filament and prepare a printer for a print
-
Typical failure modes—and how to spot and fix them early
What We’ll Do
-
Walk through a real print from digital file to manufactured part
-
Watch a print begin and learn what “good” first layers look like
-
Examine finished prints and failed prints to understand why results differ
Who This Workshop Is For
